Early Life
George Alexander Trebek was born on 22nd July, 1940 in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He was born to George Edward Trebek an immigrant from Ukraine and Lucile Lagacé a Franco-Ontarian. He was brought up in a home where both the English language as well as French were mediums of communications. Alex attended Sudbury High School after which he went to the University of Ottawa to pursue a degree in philosophy graduating in 1961.
Career
After graduating from the University of Ottawa in 1961, he kicked his television career into motion. he worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). His early days at CBC were very modest. Alex began by working as replacement for announcers, then graduated to reading the national news as well as covering events for both television and radio divisions of CBC.
In 1963, Alex did his first hosting job for Canadian music program “Music Hop” before “Reach for the Top” in 1966, then became CBC host for classical music programs between 1967 and 1970.
Alex relocated to the USA after being employed as the host of “The Wizard of Odd” for NBC. Between the 1970s and 1980s, George hosted a number of shows such as “High Rollers”, “Double Dare”, “Battlestars. He received no salary for the job as the host of “Pitfall” due to the fact that the production company went bankrupt.
After filming two episodes of the revival of the game show “Jeopardy”, he was made the host in 1984. George got the role after the original host Art Flemming withdrew owing to creative differences. The “Jeopardy” revival became a huge commercial success bagging a record 33 Daytime Emmy Awards.
He set a Guinness World Record for most gameshow episodes hosted by the same presenter after hitting an incredible 6829 episodes overtaking Bob Barker’s record with “The Price is Right”. Alex a jaw-dropping $18 million in annual salaries from “Jeopardy”.
Personal Life
In 1974, Alex Trebek got married to businesswoman Elaine Callei. The couple divorced in 1981 with no children between them. In 1990, George married real estate project manager Jean Currivan. The lovers had two children together. Alex a citizen of the United State in 1998.
George was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. He survived a year of cancer treatment before his sad passing on November 8, 2020. George Alexander Trebek passed at the age of 80.
