Kamara grew up playing soccer in Ivory Coast, where he was born and bred. But when he was 14 years old, his family settled in New Jersey after migrating to America. Kamara had no English when he first arrived in the country, but he picked it up quickly and adapted to his new surroundings.
Kamara was a standout athlete in track and field, basketball, and football when a student at Hoboken High School. On the football team, he was a defensive end and tight end. During his senior year, he was recognized as the defensive player of the year by the Hudson Reporter. After graduating from high school, Kamara played football for the Kent State Golden Flashes while a student at Kent State University. In his debut season, he was a defensive end and was selected to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team. Over the following three years, Kamara kept becoming better, and in his senior year, he was nominated to the All-MAC Second Team.

Although Kamara had a stellar collegiate career, he was not selected in the 2013 NFL Draft. But soon after the draft, the Dallas Cowboys signed him as a free agent. When the Cowboys made their final roster cuts the following year, Kamara, who had spent the entire 2013 season on their practice squad, was released.
The Kansas City Chiefs signed Kamara in January 2015 after he missed the entire 2014 season due to injury. He made the final roster for the 2015 season after making an impression at the team’s training camp. In his first season with the Chiefs, Kamara appeared in nine contests while compiling six tackles and one sack.
Kamara played for the Chiefs for two more seasons before being released by the team in September 2017. He signed with the New York Giants in October 2017 but was released a month later without playing in a game. Kamara’s NFL career was cut short due to injuries, and he announced his retirement from football in July 2018.
