Hayward was born on September 9, 1989, to Casey and Tish Hayward in Perry, Georgia, in the United States. In July 2016, his mother Tish passed away from breast cancer, and a year later, his younger brother Jecavesia Hayward was killed in a car mishap. When Hayward was five years old, he started playing junior football. He went to Perry High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track as a three-sport athlete. He started at quarterback for three seasons and also appeared in a few games at safety.
He passed for 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior and ran for 1,284 yards and an additional 18 scores to lead his squad to the state quarterfinals. He eventually decided to enroll at Vanderbilt University due to the university’s academic standing when he graduated from high school. He participated in college football for the Vanderbilt Commodores squad while attending Vanderbilt. He tied the mark for interceptions in a career with 15 during his final year as a Vanderbilt Commodore. In addition, he recorded 62 stops and seven interceptions, which ranks third among all Vanderbilt players in a single season.

Hayward went to the 2012 NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. He successfully finished all of the combine drills, placing 25th in the 40-yard dash and tied for 10th in his position group in the bench press. He was taken by the Green Bay Packers 62nd overall in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He was given a four-year, $3.30 million deal by the Packers in May 2012, with a signing bonus of $847,208 and a guaranteed $1.03 million. In the Green Bay Packers’ season opener versus the San Francisco 49ers, he played his first regular-season regular-league game and made one stop in their 30-23 loss.
After intercepting four passes in three games in the month of October 2012, he was named the NFL’s defensive rookie of the month. He also came in third place for the award for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. In three games and one start, he completed the 2013 season with eight total tackles. In 16 games and one start, he recorded a total of 42 combined stops, seven pass deflections, and three interceptions for the 2014 campaign. His three-year, $15.30 million contract with the San Diego Chargers, which includes a $2.50 million signing bonus and a $6.80 million guarantee, was inked in March 2016. The Chargers extended Hayward’s contract in March 2018, agreeing to a three-year, $33.25 million deal worth $20 million guaranteed and $8 million in signing bonus.
After his contract with the Chargers ended in March 2021, they released him. On May 4, 2021, he committed to the Las Vegas Raiders. He committed to the Atlanta Falcons in March 2022 to a two-year, $11 million deal. After sustaining a shoulder injury in Week 6, he was put on injured list on October 18, 2022.
