His parents divorced when he was very young and his mother married a Buddhist therapy and monk. Chris was brought up on a Zen retreat on Mount Baldy outside of Los Angeles. He lived on Bainbridge Island, Washington during his teenage years. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1989.
