Darnell Mooney NFL Early Life

On October 29, 1997, Mooney was born in Alabama, USA, to Valerie Hutchins and Larry Mooney. In the second year of high school, Mooney’s father, Larry, passed away from illness. Denzel Mooney is his twin brother and elder sibling. He played football and basketball for the Gadsden City Titans while a student at Gadsden City High School. He later played college football for the Tulane University Green Wave team. He was the leading receiver for the Tulane Green Wave both in his junior and senior years. He caught 48 receptions annually, totaling a combined 993 yards in 2018 and 713 yards in 2019. He had 19 scores during his time in college.

Mooney finished the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds at the NFL selection combine in 2020. In the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he was chosen by the Chicago Bears with the 173rd overall selection. On July 21, he agreed to a rookie contract with the club for four years. He caught three passes for a total of 38 yards from Mitchell Trubisky in his NFL debut, a 27-23 win over the Detroit Lions. The following week, he snagged a 15-yard pass from the New York Giants for his first touchdown. He hauled in four passes and a score in Week 15’s matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

The former increased his season-long reception total to 46, allowing him to surpass Harlon Hill’s 45-catch rookie mark for the Bears. Mooney had his finest performance of his rookie season in Week 17 against the Packers, catching 11 passes for 93 yards. He suffered an ankle injury near the conclusion of the Packers game, which prevented him from playing in the Bears’ playoff game against the New Orleans Saints. He hauled in 81 passes for 1,055 yards and four scores in the 2021 season. His best effort came in the previous game, when he caught 12 passes for 126 yards. Prior to suffering an ankle injury in Week 12 of 2022, he began the first 12 games. On November 29, 2022, he was put on injury reserve. Mooney is not in a relationship with anyone currently.
