Rodgers spent two years as a quarterback and 4,421 passing yards at Pleasant Valley High School. He established a school record for a single season in 2001 with 2,466 total yards. He graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in the spring of 2002. After high school, he was selected by Butte Community College to play football, and during his first season there, he passed for 26 touchdowns. Due to his excellent high school grades, he was able to move to the University of California, Berkeley after just one year, as opposed to the typical two years of junior college.
At the University of California, he participated in college football for the California Golden Bears. In 2003, he equaled the mark for the most 300-yard games in a season at his school with five, and he set a school record for the lowest proportion of passes intercepted. When he was a junior in 2004, he had 2,566 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He decided to forgo his senior year and enter the NFL after the 2004–05 season.

The 24th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft went to the Green Bay Packers, who chose Rodgers. He allegedly agreed to a $5.4 million assured sum, five-year, $7.7 million contract in August.
