Irv Smith Jr. NFL Early Life

Smith Jr. Was born on August 9, 1998 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Rose Matamoros and Irv Smith Sr., a former NFL star. He moved to Arizona shortly after his parents separated, where he lived his first 14 years of life. At the age of 14, he returned to New Orleans, where he attended Brother Martin High School and played high school football. He hauled in 31 passes for 558 yards and four scores as a senior. He had previously pledged to play collegiate football for Texas A&M University, but he later switched to the University of Alabama.

He participated in college football at Alabama for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He did not record a catch as an Alabama true freshman in 2016, but as a sophomore in 2017 played in 14 games and had 14 receptions for 128 yards and three touchdowns. 2018 saw him make a startling comeback to Alabama. His decision to register for the 2019 NFL Draft was made public in January 2019.

The Minnesota Vikings selected Smith Jr. With the 50th overall selection in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, he played in his first NFL game, but he did not compile any noteworthy stats. The following contest against the Green Bay Packers was when he made his debut as a receiver. The following game, he had three catches for a season-high and team-high 60 receiving yards against the Oakland Raiders. In Week 11’s matchup with the Denver Broncos, he got his first touchdown as a professional. He played in all 16 of his contests as a rookie, starting six of them. He hauled in 36 passes for 311 receiving yards, along with two scores.

He had two receiving scores in the same game in Week 9 of 2020 against the Detroit Lions, marking his first multi-touchdown game as a professional. He had 6 receptions for 53 yards and 2 scores in Week 16’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Smith may have missed the full 2021 season after it was revealed in September 2021 that he had undergone surgery to repair a torn meniscus. He sustained a foot injury in Week 8 and was put on injured reserve that month. He was then put on injured reserve on November 1 of 2022. On January 7, 2023, he became active.
