James Robinson plays American football as running back for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He began his professional career in the NFL in 2020.
James Robinson Early Life
Robinson’s parents, William Robinson and Rokaha Matarau Robinson, welcomed him into the world on August 9, 1998 in Rockford, Illinois, the United States. Both Semaj and Chaya are his sisters. A basketball and football player, he went to Rockford Lutheran High School. He gained 2,461 yards on the ground and scored 44 touchdowns as a senior, earning Class 4A All-State honors. By rushing for 9,045 yards and 158 touchdowns during his career, he broke IHSA records.
Along with playing collegiate football for the Illinois State Redbirds, he also attended Illinois State University. As a true freshman in 2016, he took part in nine games, missed three games due to a calf injury, and finished the year as the Redbirds’ third-leading rusher with 322 yards and two touchdowns on 63 carries. As a sophomore, he took over as the team’s lead running back and was recognized as first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) after amassing 933 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

He was once again awarded first-team All-MVFC, a first-team All-American, and a finalist for the Walter Payton Award in his junior season, during which he carried for 1,290 yards and 12 touchdowns. He carried for 1,899 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior, earning first-team FCS All-American and All-Conference first-team honors for the third straight year. He had the second-most rushing yards in school history at the end of his collegiate career (4,444).

Robinson joined the Jacksonville Jaguars on April 27, 2020, as an undrafted free agent, not long after the 2020 NFL Draft had ended. In Week 1 of the 2020 season, he faced the Indianapolis Colts in his NFL debut. He had a reception and 16 carries for 62 rushing yards. He received the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month award in October 2020 for his efforts in September. He became the fourth undrafted athlete in NFL history to carry for 1,000 yards in his debut season.
He was traded to the New York Jets in October 2022. For the Jets the rest of the season, he only participated in four games. He finished the 2022 season with 110 carries for 425 yards rushing, three rushing touchdowns, and 11 receptions for 51 yards receiving, two receiving scores. He committed to the New England Patriots in March 2023, agreeing to a two-year, $8 million deal.
