Crowder was born and raised in North Carolina by James and Brenda Crowder. Jamaris, a younger brother of his, has down syndrome. At Monroe High School, Crowder participated in Johnny Sowell’s football team. He contributed to Monroe High School’s three-year 29-10 record, which included three appearances in the state finals. As a junior, he had 26 catches for 618 yards, adding up to 19 touchdowns. As a senior, he gained 641 yards through the air and scored 11 touchdowns, added 790 yards through 41 receptions, and had four kickoff returns that led to scores.
After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Duke University and played college football there for the David Cutcliffe-coached Duke Blue Devils from 2011 to 2014. He took part in every one of the 12 games as a true rookie and hauled in 14 passes for 163 yards and one score. In his second year, 2012, he started all 13 games, establishing himself as a regular. He had eight scores and 1,074 yards on 76 receptions for the entire season. He made his ACC-record 108 receptions for 1,360 yards and eight scores as a junior in 2013, starting all 14 games.
In 2014, he once more began all 13 of the contests. In the 2014 Sun Bowl, his final college game, he tied the ACC’s all-time receptions record with 283 catches. He finished the season with 85 catches for 1,044 yards and six touchdowns. Crowder had 283 receptions for 3,641 yards and 23 scores at the end of his career. He earned a sociology major and an emphasis in African and African American studies at Duke and graduated in December 2014.

With the 105th overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins selected Crowder in the fourth round. In May, he committed to a four-year starting deal. He made his NFL debut in September, and his first score catch came in November on an 11-yard reception. With 59 receptions for 604 yards and two scores, he had a successful season. He had 67 receptions for 847 yards and seven scores by the time the following season was over. He had 66 receptions for 789 receiving yards and three scores when the 2017 season came to an end. In nine games during the 2018 season, Crowder recorded 29 receptions for 388 receiving yards and two receiving scores.
He agreed to a $30.5 million, three-year deal with the New York Jets in March 2019. With 78 receptions for 833 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns, he completed the 2019 season as the team’s all-around leading receiver. He completed the 2020 season with 59 receptions for 699 receiving yards and six touchdowns, and the 2021 season with 51 receptions for 447 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 12 games. His one-year contract was inked in March 2022 with the Buffalo Bills.
