Jewels was born Jewel Kilcher, on 23rd May, 1974 in Payson, Utah. She was raised in a Mormon household in Anchorage, Alaska. Her parents are Lenedra (mother) and Attila (father) also known as Atz Kilcher.
She has an older brother Shane, and a younger brother Atz Jr. After the parents divorced, the family moved away from the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Jewels was brought by her father. They lived in a house without indoor plumbing. It was during this time that she began to nurture her talent performing music with her father.
Jewels had a scholarship to study at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan where she studied operatic voice and guitar. After graduation, she moved to San Diego, California performing at coffee shops and virtually living from her van.

During one of her usual performances at The Inner Change coffee shop in San Diego, she was spotted by Inga Vainshtein who got in touch with Danny Goldberg of Atlantic Records for a demo to which he affirmed. Inga naturally became Jewels’ manager helping her to release the album “Pieces of You” in 1995.
The album was a major success, receiving the platinum certification 12 times in the U.S., as well as one of the best-=selling debuts in the annals of music history. Jewels got the privilege of singing the national anthem at Super Bowl XXXII in 1998. She then published her maiden literary work “A Night Without Armor” which became a US best-seller. Jewels signed with Valory Records after Atlantis abrogated the contract with them. She released the country album, “Perfectly Clear” in 2008 which made it straight to #1 on the “Billboard” Country Album Chart.
Her dream to compete on “Dancing with the Stars” in 2009 did not materialize as she fractured her tibias. She made a star appearance as June Carter Cash in the Lifetime movie “Ring of Fire” releasing a memoir “Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story” in the year 2015.
The years 2017 and 2018 saw Jewels produce and star in “Concrete Evidence: A Fixer Upper Mystery”. In 1995, she was romantically involved with Sean Penn after he spotted her on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”. Jewels married Ty Murray (rodeo cowboy) on August 7, 2008 after dating for 10 years. On July 11, 2011, they welcomed their son, Kase. The couple divorced in 2014.
