Joe’s career was influenced greatly by his parentage. His parents had owned and sold a couple of restaurants. When Joe graduated from Boston College, he managed to convince his parents to open Becco. After Joe’s parents divorced in 1997, his father transferred his stake to Joe and his sister Tanya.
Early Life and Education
Joseph Bastianich was born in 1968 in Astoria, Queens. His parents were Felice and Lidia Bastianich both Istrian and Italian immigrants who had moved to the United States. Joe worked together with his parents in their Italian restaurant Felidia in Manhattan.
Joe attended Fordham Preparatory School after which he proceeded to Boston College where he pursued political science and philosophy.
Career
Joe began his career as a bond trader on Wall Street. He later switched careers and ventured into the food industry. Joe opened an Italian restaurant called Becco with his Mum, Lidia Bastianich.
He later in partnership with Mario Batali opened Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca, an Italian restaurant which got the prestigious accolade three stars from The New York Times. This was a major feat as the last time such a feat happened was forty years prior. The duo opened seven additional restaurants in New York; Lupa, Esca, Casa Mono, Bar Jamon, otto, Del Posto and Eatlay.
Batali after his sexual harassment accusation sold his shares in the business to Joe and his sister Tanya.
Joe has co-authored books on Italian wine as well as his memoir; Restaurant Man. His books achieved the enviable feat of New York Times Best Seller shortly after its release in 2012.
Joe has made a number of television appearances as well. He was judge on the American MasterChef as well as MasterChef Junior. Joe released his maiden album, “Aka Joe” in 2019. He made a cameo in the television film, “An American Girl. He also served as judge of Italia’s Got Talent as well as family Food Fight Italia.
