Julio Iglesias Early Life
Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva was popularly known as Julio Iglesias. He was born on September 23, 1943 in Madrid, Spain. Julio’s father, Julio Iglesias Sr. was a medical doctor from Ourrense. His mother, Maria del Rosario de la Cueva is of Jewish ancestry. During his youthful days, he combined studying law at the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid as well as professional football. Julio was at one time the goalkeeper for Real Madrid Castilla in the Segunda Division. His football career was curtailed when an accident rendered him immobile for two years. While recovering at the hospital, he was given a guitar present by a nurse to help him exercise his hands. This helped him uncover a latent talent in music.

Julio was crowned winner of the Benidorm International Song Festival in 1968. It was an event for songwriters in Spain. After his victory, he was signed by Discos Columbia, the Spanish version of Columbia Records. Julio quickly released his debut “Yo Canto” (I sing) in 1969. Julio was chosen to represent his country at the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with his song “Gwendolyne” which he came fourth. Julio sang in different languages including English, French, Portuguese, German, Italian and even did a song in Galician, “Un Canto A Galicia” to honor his father. His songs in multiple languages was vey instrumental in gaining him popularity across Europe. He relocated to Miami, Florida and put pen to a deal with CBS International. Julio’s first English-language hit song was a cover of “Begin the Beguine”. How did Julio Iglesias make his money? Julio released the song that most people consider as his English-language breakthrough album “1100 Bel Air Place”. The album sold in excess of 3 million in the United States alone. Julio married Isabel Preysler in January 1971. Isabel was a Filipina of Spanish roots. She belongs to the wealthy aristocratic Perez de Tagle family. The two divorced in 1979. They had three children together. Julio co-habited with Dutch model Miranda Rijnsburger who was 22 years younger. They lived together in the Dominican Republic with Julio becoming a Dominican citizen in 2005. He married Rijnsburger in August 2010. They have five children together.
