Thomas Mark Harmon was born on September 2, 1951 in Burbank, California. His parents are Tom Harmon (a Heisman Trophy-winning football player and broadcaster) and Elyse Knox (an actress, model, designer and artist. Harmon was the youngest among his siblings. Harmon went to Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. He went to Pierce College earning an associate degree. Harmon got offers to play football at several major college football programs, he opted to attend and play for UCLA over Oklahoma and many others. Harmon played in quarterback for Bruins after he was transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles in 1972 and 1973.

Harmon made a return to television with the NBC series “Reasonable Doubts” from 1991 to 1993 starring as Chicago police detective Dickie Cobb for two seasons. He married Pam Dawber (actress) on March 21, 1987. The couple have two sons, Sean Thomas Harmon and Ty Christian Harmon. His sister Kristin was married to Ricky Nelson making him the uncle of actress Tracy Nelson and singers Matthew and Gunnar Nelson from the rock duo Nelcon. He filed for custody fo his nephew Sam on grounds of his sister’s incapability of good parenting and later dropped the case.
