Martavis Bryant is an American wide receiver who plays for the Vegas Vipers in the XFL. In 2014, he became a member of the National Football League and has been playing professionally ever since.

Martavis Bryant Early Life

Bryant was born on December 20, 1991, to a single mother, Roberta Bryant, a former textile industry worker, in Calhoun Falls, South Carolina. He attended Calhoun Falls High School in South Carolina before transferring to Anderson’s T. L. Hanna High School. As a junior, he had 44 receptions for 776 yards and six touchdowns. As a senior, he had 70 receptions for 722 yards and eleven touchdowns, good for first-team all-state honors.

He spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia after high school to meet NCAA first eligibility requirements. At Clemson University, he participated in college football for the Clemson Tigers. With 61 receptions, 1,354 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns, he finished his college career. On January 5, 2014, Bryant declared that he would forgo his college senior year in order to join the 2014 NFL Draft.

After graduating from Clemson, Bryant was invited to participate in the NFL Combine and successfully completed all positional workouts for scouts and team representatives. He was taken 118th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He agreed to a $2.659 million, four-year deal with the organization in June 2014, with a $439,220 guarantee and a $439,220 signing bonus. In ten games and three starts, he had 26 receptions for 549 receiving yards and eight touchdowns by the time his rookie season was up. In 2014, his 21.1 yards per catch ranked first among wide receivers in the NFL.

He broke the league’s substance abuse rules in August 2015, and was consequently suspended for the first four games. For another infraction of the league’s substance usage policy, the NFL announced in March 2016 that Bryant has been suspended for the entire 2016 NFL season. He was reinstated by the NFL on a limited basis in April 2017. As the team’s starting wide receiver going into the regular season, he finished the year with 50 receptions for 603 yards and three touchdowns. The Steelers dealt him to the Oakland Raiders in April 2018. Due to his breach of the conditions of his conditional reinstatement, the NFL placed him on an indefinite suspension in December. In 2019, he submitted a request for rehire.

He signed a contract with the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts in January 2021, however he was put on the suspended list in July for missing training camp. He was let go following the season despite never having played for the Argos. Bryant was a February 28, 2022, signing with the Edmonton Elks. In May 2022—before training camp had started—the Elks released him. He joined the team as a member of The FCF Beasts in April 2022. The Vegas Vipers chose Bryant with the fifth overall pick in the 2023 XFL Skill Players Draft. Bryant has a son named Kalle with Deja Hiott, with whom he is in a relationship but who is not his wife. Moreover, Bryant is the father of two other women’s daughters, Brooke and London.
