Garrett was born to Audrey and Lawrence Garrett on December 29, 1995 in Arlington, Texas, in the United States. His mother Audrey was a Hampton University All-American in the sport of running. He has an older sister named Brea Garrett, who competed in track and field for Texas A&M and earned the 2014 NCAA weight throw championship, making her the first weight throw champion in Aggie history.

Sean Williams, Garrett’s talented half-brother and a star basketball player, is another relative. Garrett competed in football, basketball, and track at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. He won the 2013 Landry Award, awarded to the best high school athlete in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, for his 19.5 sacks as a senior in football. He enrolled in Texas A&M University after high school and played college football for the Texas A&M Aggies football squad.
He broke Texas A&M’s 5.5-sack freshman mark in just six games as a freshman. He made 57 total stops as a sophomore, 18.5 of those for loss, seven quarterback hurries, five forced fumbles, a blocked punt, and won the Bill Willis Award for best defensive linemen. Even though injuries kept him from playing much of his junior season, he still managed to rack up 8.5 sacks, 32 total tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 10 QB hurries, two forced fumbles, and a pass breakup. He formally announced in December 2016 that he intended to forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility and join the 2017 NFL Draft.

Garrett participated in the Indianapolis NFL Scouting Combine and finished most of the drills, but he chose to forego the short shuttle and three-cone drill. Using the first overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected him. He inked a four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $30.41 million with the Browns in May of that year, which also included a $20.25 million signing bonus. With 31 total tackles, seven sacks, one forced turnover, one pass breakup, and one recovered fumble, he had a productive rookie season.
Although he was only able to participate in 11 of the team’s 16 games due to injury, he still led the team in sacks. He received the defensive captaincy the following year. In addition to having started every game of that season, he also had 13.5 sacks, 44 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 29 quarterback hits, three passes defended, and three forced turnovers. On the list of the NFL’s top 100 players for 2019, his fellow players placed him 49th.
The Browns exercised Garrett’s fifth-year option in April 2020, and in July he agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract extension with the club. Along with three of his teammates, he was chosen for the 2020 NFL All-Pro Team. Andra Davis’ previous mark for the most sacks in a single contest was broken by him. Garrett was chosen as a starting for the 2022 Pro Bowl and was chosen for the 2021 All-Pro first team.Garret has never been married and is not currently hitched. He is in a relationship with Serra Tumey, but neither of them are betrothed. He hasn’t yet had any children of his own.
