American actress Angela Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City. She participated in the debate team, the student government, the theater club, and chorus while attending Boca Ciega High School. She was also a cheerleader and a part of the Upward Bound college prep program. She attended Yale University after high school, where she majored in African-American studies and earned a B.A. there in 1980. She graduated with her M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama in 1983. After earning her degree, Angela worked at a beauty shop as a receptionist and image researcher. Soon after, she started searching for acting jobs in New York theater.
With the help of her longtime tutor Lloyd Richards, she made appearances in two August Wilson pieces at the Yale Repertory Theatre. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (1984) and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (1986) were the Wilson plays in which Bassett appeared. She had the chance to return to the Wilson canon in 2006 when she co-starred in the play Fences with her longtime partner Laurence Fishburne at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. When she performed in J. E. Franklin’s Black Girl at Second Stage Theatre in 1985, it was one of her first New York appearances. In the made-for-TV movie Doubletake the same year, she made her debut on television in a prostitution scene.
In order to make her acting debut as a news reporter in the 1986 film F/X, she joined the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). She moved to Los Angeles in 1988 in search of more acting possibilities after making early guest appearances on A Man Called Hawk and 227, both in 1989. Her early performances in the 1991 films Boyz n the Hood and Malcolm X attracted industry notice and received accolades from a wide audience (1992). When her roles for Malcolm X were finished, she returned to Los Angeles and got a call to audition for a movie based on Tina Turner’s autobiography I, Tina. She outcompeted Halle Berry and Robin Givens for the lead role.
The Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy went to Angela for her depiction of Turner, marking her the first African-American to do so. Despite being nominated for an Academy Award for “The Piano,” Holly Hunter won the award. She provided the voice for First Lady Michelle Obama in the 2010 Simpsons episode “Stealing First Base,” which viewers praised as a “terrific” stand-in for Obama. In the critically acclaimed superhero movie Black Panther from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she played Queen Ramonda, the mother of the title character. From her alma institution, Yale University, she received an honorary D.F.A. degree in 2018.
In the Pixar animated movie Soul, which will debut on Disney+ in December 2020, she gave the voice of Dorothea Williams. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she will play Ramonda once more in November 2022. The 28th Critics’ Choice Awards and the 80th Golden Globe Awards both recognized her for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the sequel, marking her the first performer to get such an honor for a Marvel Comics-based movie. Her nomination for an Academy Award in the same category made her the first actor from a Marvel Studios film to receive a nomination in any acting category.
