Carl Nassib, who came out as gay on June 21, 2021, is the only athlete to openly come out as gay or bisexual while playing in the National Football League (NFL). On January 15, 2022, he made history by playing the first openly gay NFL playoff game.

Since their retirement, six former NFL players have come out publicly. Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft, making him the league’s first openly gay athlete to be chosen. Nevertheless, Sam was released before the regular season even officially began. In August 2015, he became the first openly gay player to compete in the Canadian Football League.

Here is a list of some NFL players who have also admitted to being gay during their careers;

1. Michael Sam – Sam was a defensive end who played for the University of Missouri and was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft. He came out as gay prior to the draft, making him the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team. However, he never played in a regular season game and was eventually cut from the Rams.

2. Ryan O’Callaghan – O’Callaghan was an offensive tackle who played for the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs. He came out as gay in 2017 after retiring from the NFL. He has since become an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and works with organizations to support LGBTQ+ youth.

3. Kwame Harris – Harris was an offensive tackle who played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. He came out as gay in 2013, several years after retiring from the NFL. In an interview, he said that he struggled with his sexuality while playing in the NFL and felt that he had to keep it a secret.

4. Wade Davis – Davis was a defensive back who played for the Tennessee Titans and the Seattle Seahawks. He came out as gay after retiring from the NFL and has since become an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. He founded the You Can Play Project, which aims to promote inclusivity in sports.

5. David Kopay – Kopay played for several NFL teams in the 1960s and 1970s, including the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers. He came out as gay in 1975, becoming one of the first professional athletes to do so. He has since become an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has written a book about his experiences.

It’s worth noting that coming out as gay can be difficult for anyone, but it can be especially challenging for professional athletes who are often under intense scrutiny from fans and the media. These players have shown courage and resilience in being true to themselves and paving the way for greater inclusivity in sports.
