Romeo Okwara Early Life
Okwara was born on June 17, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, to parents who were both from that country, Julius and Melda Okwara. Julian Okwara, his younger brother, also plays for the Detroit Lions and was a Notre Dame football player in college. Okwara went to Ardrey Kell High School and played collegiate football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the University of Notre Dame during his time there. He played in all 13 games during his freshman season in 2012, as well as all 13 games as a sophomore. He started on the defensive line in 12 of the 13 games he played in as a junior in 2014.

Romeo Okwara Career
In May 2016, Okwara joined the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent. He had a knee strain and was put on injured reserve in October 2017. In December 2017, he was brought off injured reserve and added to the active roster. He was released by the Giants in September 2018 and picked up off waivers by the Detroit Lions in the same month. He participated in 15 games, making 15 starts, and finished the year with 39 total tackles, a team-high 7.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Okwara and the Lions agreed to a two-year contract extension in March 2019. At the start of training camp on August 2, 2020, he was added to the active/non-football injury list. On August 14, 2020, he was reactivated.
He recorded two sacks in Week 7 of the 2020 season over the Atlanta Falcons. He recorded a sack on Ryan Tannehill in the end zone for a safety in Week 15 against the Tennessee Titans. He recorded ten sacks in 2020, compared to the Lions’ team’s overall total of just 14. He had the same number of sacks in the 2020 season as he had the rest of his career. He agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract deal with the Lions in March 2021. He tore his Achilles in Week 4 and was put on injured reserve in October 2021. He was put on the reserve/PUP list in August 2022 to begin the season, then on December 3 he was activated.
