Actress, author, singer, businesswoman, and health advocate Suzanne Somers hails from the United States. She spent her teenage years in Burlingame, California, where she cheered at Mercy High School and Capuchino High School. She then gained admission to the Catholic Society of the Sacred Heart’s San Francisco College for Women, and in 1969 she was chosen to be a prize model for the Anniversary Game. In the latter half of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, Somers started appearing in tiny parts, notably in support of her poetry book on various talk shows. As a topless “pool girl,” she played an uncredited cameo in Magnum Force in 1973 and made another appearance in The Rockford Files in 1974.
In January 1977, she received a part in the ABC sitcom Three’s Company. The day before the third and final pilot’s official start date, actress Somers was hired after auditioning after actresses Suzanne Zenor and Susan Lanier failed to win over producers during the first two pilots. Somers was recommended by ABC President Fred Silverman after he saw her on the Tonight Show. She served as the spokesperson for the Thighmaster, a piece of training gear that is cradled between the thighs, in a series of infomercials during the beginning of the 1990s. She performed for American service members serving abroad during this time in her career. Her induction into the infomercial Hall of Fame by Direct Marketing Response in May 2014, which referred to her as a “legend in the business,” was announced.
In April 2000, Somers received a stage II breast cancer diagnosis. She underwent a lumpectomy to remove the cancer and then radiation therapy. Instead of undergoing chemotherapy, Somers chose to take an extract of fermented mistletoe called Iscador. The Blonde in the Thunderbird, a collection of tales about her life and work, was a one-woman show she performed on Broadway in the summer of 2005. Due to unfavorable reviews and weak ticket sales, the play was canceled earlier than expected and was not scheduled to run until September. A Southern California wildfire was blamed for destroying Somers’ Malibu home in January 2007, according to the Associated Press. The Suzanne Somers Breaking Through chat program debuted at CafeMom in 2012.
With former Three’s Company co-star Joyce DeWitt, three of the episodes included a reunion and reconciliation. Somers’ participation on the 20th season of Dancing with the Stars was officially revealed in February 2015. Tony Dovolani, an expert dancer, was her partner. During the competition’s fifth week, Somers and Dovolani were eliminated and placed ninth.
