Wang was born on June 27, 1949. Her parents are Florence Wu and Cheng Ching Wang. Wang’s parents moved to the United States from China in the 1940s. Her mother was a translator for the United Nations and her father owned a medicine company. Wang has a younger brother names Kenneth.
She started figure-skating at the age of 8 and within a short period reached a high-level. She did both independent and pair-skating. Wang took part in the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships with the view to making the U.S. Olympic team.
Her dream albeit remained a dream, she continues skating today and has designed several figure skating costumes. Wang attended Friends Seminary before she was later sent to the Chapin School (an all-girls academy). She graduated high school in 1967.
After, Wang enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College where she studied history. Wang studied at the University of Paris and graduated with a bachelor’s in 1971.

She was hired after graduation to work as an editor at Vogue becoming the youngest editor in the annals of the Magazine’s history. After 17 years with Vogue, she left to work with Ralph Lauren in 1987.
Her passion to create her own designs caused her to open her own boutique inside the Carlyle Hotel in New York City which displayed her bridal gowns. Wang’s boutiques have grown in leaps and bounds since then expanding her tentacles to London, Tokyo and Sydney.
She extended her product lines in 2002 to include designs for the home, setting the grounds for The Vera Wang China and Crystal Collection. Her retail brand was called Simple Vera in concert with the Kohl’s with the quest to making her designs available to the public at affordable prices.
