Early Life
Zendaya Coleman was born Zendaya Maree Stoemer Coleman on 1st September, 1996 in Oakland, California. She was born to Claire Stoermer (Scottish and German ancestry) and Kazembe Ajamu Coleman (African-American). Zendaya is the youngest of six children. She attended Fruitvale Elementary School where her mother taught.
At the age of six, she featured in a play for Black History Month before later performing in productions at the California Shakespeare Theatre. Her mother worked there as the house manager during summers and Zendaya assisted with seating audience as well as sell fundraising tickets. She was perhaps inspired to pursue acting as a result of her time at the theatre.
At the age of 8, she became part of the hip-hop dance troupe known as Future Shock Oakland as well as perform the hula dancing with The Academy of Hawaiian Arts. While at Oakland School for the Arts, she featured in several local theatrical productions including “Once on This Island”, and “Caroline or Change” at Theatre Works.
While studying acting at the American Conservatory Theatre and the CalShakes Conservatory program, she featured in several Shakespeare plays such as “Richard III”, “Twelfth Night” and “As You Like It”. Career
Zendaya starred as Rocky Blue in 2010 on the series, “Shake It Up” which got 6.2 million viewers when it premiered.
